Job Description
Internship 2020 - Electrical Engineering tools for mission definition for Satellites (m/f)
Job Description:
As part of a school curriculum in initial training, you are looking for a mandatory internship or integrated into a gap year that will allow you to validate your studies. The internship duration is 3 months.
What if you start your journey with us!
We offer you to work in a world-leading company which is at the heart of a digital transformation, at the cutting edge of research and innovation.
Context of the internship:
We are looking for a student of engineering school, master of engineering or equivalent who will be joining us at Airbus Defence & Space site in the electrical engineering department.
This internship is to be filled from June 2020 (the dates are subject to a certain flexibility).
Here in Airbus Defence & Space we are currently working on the definition of future aerospace systems, requiring extremely high performances and autonomy. One of the critical systems is the Electrical one, which has to provide autonomous power from high efficiency solar cells, energy storage capability with high energy densities and power distribution and regulation to the different electrical equipment (electric propulsion, payload, platform).
You will be joining the department electrical engineering . In the framework of different satellite programs (Earth Observation, Science, Constellations), the electrical engineering department is called to perform power budget simulations. These analyses contribute in solar array and battery sizing and allow to verify if the power architecture at system level is balanced and appropriate. For this purpose, powerful software developed by Airbus Defence & Space named Systema is used. This software allows simulating the solar flux by raytracing according to satellite mission. The solar flux is then converted into the electrical domain thanks to solar panel models and used to compute currents, voltages at each point of the satellites electrical architecture.
As part of this internship, you will be in charge of developing specific tools, challenging current state-of-the-art, for interfacing with Systema software (Input: mission definition of the spacecraft, Output: electrical post processing). You will test your software using scenarios and electrical design results on real spacecraft data.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
You will be working under the supervision of your manager who will help you identify your professional objectives and support you in the development of your skills.
Your main activities will include:
- To acknowledge current state-of-the-art of the tools used in Electrical Engineering (Power analysis software, Mission description/definition tools, Electrical post processing tools),
- To assess the priority and effort required for new developments and trade-off the ones to be performed within the 3-months period,
- To improve our existing tool for the definition of a satellite mission, and interface your script with our energy budget simulation software (python/VBA),
- To develop and implement a user friendly post processing tool for our power analyses, plot curves and generate tables with computed data (python),
- To test your scripts with real scenarios of Electrical Engineering design for spacecraft and/or airborne systems.
Required skills and experience:
You are preparing a five year degree in Engineering or equivalent with specialisation in Computer Science / Electrical Engineering / Space Engineering and you have the following skills and experience:
- Language: intermediate level of English and negotiation level of French,
- Python, VBA, (Matlab, Fortran),
- Previous experience / knowledge on Space Engineering, Electrical Engineering would be a plus,
- Experience using Systema software would be a plus.
You have the following soft skills:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team,
- Rigorous, curious and autonomous,
- Organizational skills,
- Ability to analyze and synthesize information.
Depending on the specificities of the offer, you may have to travel to another locations.
If your profile catches our attention, you will be invited to perform a video interview during which you will have a few minutes to tell us about your background, motivations and your professional project. Afterwards, your application could be proposed to the managers for further review.
